When I first began interning at Whispering Hope I felt like I wouldn't be much help. Everyone there had their daily jobs or routines and I was still struggling to even say hi to someone. It felt as if you were a freshman in high school in a room full of seniors. They have the flow of things and you're walking around with a map trying to figure out where to find your class. Well that was me. I was struggling to find my flow.
Eventually I started getting the hang of things and I began learning new ways to help. Not only that, but I am the only bilingual person there and I've helped translate multiple things such as the organizations website, fliers, etc. It makes me feel useful. I'm putting my first learned language into use on a daily basis there and it makes me feel included. I use to think interning there would always be boring but after getting the hang of things the internship there has actually become something fun to do. I'm helping and interacting with everyone there and learning. Although I am now getting the flow of things, I feel like I can still improve more. When I first started I was in charge of organizing items, then I was in charge of restocking and now I am translating things left and right. I think it'll take time until I can learn something new but that's okay because there's always new opportunities to grab. I just need to be open to taking them and learning more ways to approach certain things, z

Reflection: (How will you potentially use it?) 25 pts I will use the information to discuss how important critical thinking is and support it through quotes and research that was conducted by a group of researches and what their findings were. We were given the assignment to complete an online OWEL survey that asks us questions over qualities such as honesty, patience ,etc. At the end it gives you scores for interpersonal, initiative, and dependability. The test over all was interesting and and made you judge your own qualities. . After getting back my scores I saw my inititative score was a bit low. It's something I will have to work on because taking initiative is really important now a days. The test made that clear and was helpful because it showed me what I am lacking in.
Taking initiative at my mentorship place is important, It is valued there. You need to take inititIve everywhere you go because people look up to that. It shows dedication to the matter. If I am going to be successful in social working I will need to take initiative. I need to leave my comfort spot and put myself out there. When it comes to communication we can all agree that we tend to speak differently when it comes to our own friends, family, or even employer. Personally, I tend to speak very informally with my friends and laid back. When it comes to my family I still speak informally but just a bit more mature. As soon as it comes to my employer I speak in a formal and mature way. My friends expect me to be laid back with them since they are laid back. My family is laid back yet still respectful so they expect me to be the same but when it comes to my employer I am supposed to be formal since it is work.
Some point I am considering talking about with my mentor is how close is everyone there so I can have an idea of how to be. I plan on asking her things such as what activitesthey do and the environment there. After reading, "Making the Most of Your Internship or Co-op" it made me realize that this internship at Whispering Hope is something that could help me in the long run. The article encouraged you to get involved in order to gain experience. Whispering Hope offers many opportunities and I am looking forward for them. After reading the article I know for sure that I need to be more involved because this isn't something to take lightly. This internship could be more beneficial than what it seems and could open new doors for me.

After reading about the 3 stages and conducting my own take on the videos, I found that they are very helpful. Creating this video gave me a better understanding. After watching JD Russo's video I was truly moved by the fact that he's 16 year old boy who is more aware of the world compared to other kids his age. Russo speaks about how we live in a society where the younger generation is too caught up with social media to even care about what is going on around us. He questions his generation on why they are not putting down the phones, and going outside to interact with one another. After watching his video it made me realize that my generation needs to unplug from technology in order to plug ourselves into reality.
Russo's video has helped confirmed my statement. We live in a world where families and children suffer on a daily basis. Becoming a social worker is my way of stepping foot into the real world and helping those who call out for help. ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zarli7__Su8 ) After reading the handout and listening to the podcast I have a better understanding that I have to take charge if I am to have a great experience at my location. It certainly has helped me think of more questions to ask my mentor, Elise. They both make it clear that you have to take charge of yourself and get yourself involved by starting conversations and approaching the workers there in order to build a relationship.
While I intern at Whispering Hope I hope to truly confirm to myself that I indeed do want to dedicate my life to helping people as a social worker. I hope to be able to get more involved by helping out with projects, attending gatherings, and helping the volunteers there such as the nurse and the coordinator. This opportunity will help me get a glimpse of what my job will resemble by helping families who are at a disadvantage. |
